That sentence contains the word "may" on purpose. The history is long and the mechanism is plausible, but the human evidence is genuinely mixed, and we would rather tell you why than pretend otherwise.

Two thousand years of the same idea

By the second century, the Greek physician Galen was recommending valerian for trouble sleeping. Dioscorides, writing a century earlier, listed it under the name "phu," which many historians read as a comment on the smell. We will get to the smell.

The herb kept the same job through medieval monastery gardens, through 19th-century apothecaries, and through wartime England, where it was taken to steady nerves during air raids.

Two millennia of people reaching for the same root for the same reason is not proof. But it is a long, consistent signal, and it is why valerian is one of the most-studied calming herbs in modern research.

How valerian might work

Valerian's most-studied compounds are valerenic acids. In lab and animal studies, they appear to interact with GABA-A receptors. GABA is the brain's main inhibitory signal — the chemistry of slowing down rather than speeding up.

That is the leading theory, not a settled fact. Human studies measure sleep, not receptors, so the mechanism in people is inferred rather than observed. Other compounds in the root may contribute too, which is part of why isolated valerenic acid alone has not told the whole story.

The honest ceiling on the claim: valerian may support a sense of calm and self-rated sleep quality. Nothing stronger is earned by the data.

Why do valerian studies conflict?

Some trials find a modest improvement in how people rate their own sleep. Others find no difference from placebo. Reviews of the research usually land on "promising but inconsistent."

The biggest reason is extract variability. Valerenic acid content changes with the plant's species, growing conditions, root age, and extraction method, and water-based extracts differ chemically from alcohol-based ones. One trial's 400 mg is simply not the same substance as another trial's 400 mg.

Add small sample sizes and self-reported outcomes, and conflicting results are almost guaranteed. This is not unique to valerian, but valerian is a clear example of it.

Does valerian really smell that bad?

Yes. The culprit is isovaleric acid, the same compound found in aged cheese and old gym socks. Cats tend to love it. Most humans do not.

What valerian cannot do

Valerian cannot knock you out the way prescription sleep medication can, and it will not override caffeine at 4 PM, a bright screen at midnight, or an unresolved stressful day. The measured effects, where they appear, are modest.

It also is not a substitute for finding out why sleep is going wrong. If trouble sleeping lasts most nights for more than a few weeks, or if you snore loudly and wake up gasping, talk to a doctor rather than an herb.
