Half of a greens powder is red. That half is doing different work.

The category is called "greens." Look at what is actually in the scoop and a large share of it is red — beet, hibiscus, cranberry, acai, pomegranate. That is not filler and it is not colouring. It is a second, separate group of plant compounds, and it is there for reasons that have nothing to do with chlorophyll.

Why the name is wrong

"Greens powder" is a shop-shelf label, not a description. In CALMÉA Greens Superfood, the scoop is 4.2 g and holds 4,000 mg of plant material across four blends. The Greens Blend is 2,000 mg. The Reds Blend is 1,500 mg — beet root, hibiscus, strawberry, cranberry, acai, blueberry and pomegranate. That is 37.5% of the plant material in the scoop, and none of it is a green vegetable.

Once you notice this, you cannot un-notice it. The interesting question stops being "how many servings of vegetables is this" and becomes "what are these two halves each doing."

The green half: chlorophyll, fibre and a lot of leaf

Barley grass, wheat grass, alfalfa, spirulina, broccoli, green tea. Cereal grasses and algae, dried and milled. What they contribute is what leaves contribute: chlorophyll, some minerals, some fibre, and a green vegetal taste that most brands then have to cover up.

Spirulina is the odd one — a cyanobacterium rather than a plant, unusually high in protein by dry weight. In a 4.2 g scoop split across seven ingredients, though, nobody is getting a meaningful amount of protein from it. Anyone who implies otherwise is doing arithmetic they hope you will not repeat.

The red half: pigments that are not there for colour

Here is the part worth understanding. The red, purple and near-black plants in a scoop carry two pigment families:

  • Anthocyanins — the compounds that make blueberries blue, acai purple, cranberries red. Chemically they are flavonoids, and they are among the most heavily studied plant compounds in nutrition research.
  • Betalains — a rarer family, found in beet, and chemically unrelated to anthocyanins despite doing a similar visual job. Beetroot is one of the few common foods that carries them.

Beet root brings something else as well: it is unusually high in dietary nitrate. Nitrate from vegetables is converted by bacteria on the tongue into nitrite, and onward into nitric oxide — a signalling molecule the body makes constantly. This pathway is the single best-evidenced thing in the reds half of any greens powder, and it is why beet shows up in sports nutrition rather than only in wellness.

Evidence note: that beetroot is a rich nitrate source and that dietary nitrate raises circulating nitrite is well established. The size of any downstream effect from the amount of beet in a multi-ingredient scoop is a different question, and an unanswered one.

The word "antioxidant" and why we mostly avoid it

Every reds blend on earth is sold with the word antioxidant. It is worth knowing where that word came from and what happened to it.

For years, foods were ranked by a laboratory measure called ORAC — oxygen radical absorbance capacity. It produced satisfying league tables: acai near the top, blueberries high, and a marketing industry built on top of them.

In 2012 the US Department of Agriculture withdrew its own ORAC database. Its stated reason was that the values were being misused, and that the antioxidant capacity of a food measured in a test tube has no established relationship to what happens after you eat it. The people who built the measure took it off the table.

That is why you will not find us ranking anything by antioxidant score. The compounds are real, they are well characterised, and the honest sentence is that fruits and vegetables rich in them are associated with good outcomes in population research — not that a scoop of dried fruit delivers those outcomes.

What a powder cannot copy

Three things get lost between a fruit and a spray-dried fruit powder, and no brand can engineer them back:

  1. Water and volume. A cup of blueberries fills you up. Nothing in a 4.2 g scoop does.
  2. Intact fibre structure. Milling and drying change how the plant matrix behaves in the gut, whatever the fibre gram count says.
  3. Bioavailability. Anthocyanin absorption is famously low and famously variable between people — differences in gut bacteria matter more than differences in dose.

We have said this before in the article about whether greens powders replace vegetables, and the answer has not changed since. They do not. What a scoop does is put a wide, colour-diverse set of plants into a day that might otherwise contain none — in about fifteen seconds, which is the entire argument in its favour.

How to read the two halves on any label

A short checklist you can use on any tub, including ours:

  • Look for the split. If a label gives one combined "proprietary blend" number and no breakdown, you cannot tell how much is green, red or maltodextrin.
  • Check the scoop weight against the blend total. Ours is 4.2 g holding 4,000 mg of plant material. If a scoop weighs 12 g and lists 3,000 mg of actives, the other 9 g is something, and you are entitled to know what.
  • Ignore the fruit count. "Contains 40 superfoods" tells you the number of lines on an ingredient list, not the amount of anything.
  • Read the order. Ingredients are listed by weight within a blend. First named is the largest.

FAQ

Is the reds blend just for flavour?

It affects the flavour — ours tastes slightly berry-forward because of it — but the reds are a distinct group of plants carrying pigment compounds that the green half does not contain. Flavour is a side effect, not the purpose.

Does beet powder work like beet juice?

The nitrate research that people cite is mostly built on concentrated beetroot juice at doses well above what a mixed scoop contains. Treat them as different things.

Why is there ashwagandha in a greens powder?

It sits in a separate 300 mg blend with cinnamon, turmeric, ginseng, mangosteen and black pepper extract — adaptogens and spices rather than greens or reds. Amounts are on the Supplement Facts panel.

Should I take it in the morning?

Any time works. Most people attach it to the morning because a habit needs somewhere to live, and the morning is the part of the day that repeats most reliably.

Can I mix it into a smoothie instead of water?

Yes. Cold water or milk is the fastest route; a smoothie works and hides the vegetal note from the green half.
