What is glycine?
Glycine is the simplest amino acid there is: two carbons, a nitrogen, and not much else. Your body makes it on its own and also pulls it from the protein you eat.

What glycine does in the body
Its biggest job is structural. Glycine makes up about a third of collagen, the protein that gives skin, tendons, and connective tissue their framework — every third position in the collagen chain is a glycine.
Its second job is signaling. In the brainstem and spinal cord, glycine works as an inhibitory neurotransmitter, meaning it tells certain neurons to quiet down rather than speed up.

Does glycine help with sleep?
Here is the honest version. A handful of small studies gave people about 3 g of glycine before bed and asked how they slept.
Participants tended to report falling asleep somewhat faster and rating their sleep quality higher the next morning. One proposed mechanism: glycine appears to nudge core body temperature down slightly by increasing blood flow to the hands and feet, and a small temperature drop is part of how the body normally settles toward sleep.
The catch is scale. These were small trials, often a few dozen people, sometimes funded by ingredient suppliers, and they leaned on self-reported sleep more than lab-verified sleep. Glycine may support a normal wind-down. The evidence is early, and we would rather say that plainly than inflate it.

How much glycine is in magnesium glycinate?
Magnesium glycinate is a chelate: one magnesium atom held between two glycine molecules. By weight, most of what you swallow is actually glycine.

Why chelation uses glycine
Minerals on their own are awkward to absorb. Magnesium oxide, for example, is cheap but poorly absorbed, and it has a reputation for sending people to the bathroom.
Binding magnesium to glycine helps with both problems. The chelate is stable enough to survive stomach acid and compact enough to move through pathways the body already uses for amino acids.
Glycine earns the job because it is the smallest amino acid available, which keeps the finished molecule light, and because it is gentle. Glycinate forms are generally easier on digestion than oxide at comparable amounts.
What glycine cannot do
Glycine is not a sedative, and it will not switch you off at midnight. At best it works as one small input to a wind-down.

It also cannot substitute for the basics: a consistent bedtime, a dark room, and caffeine that stops by early afternoon.
