What GABA does in your brain
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is your nervous system's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. When GABA binds to a neuron, that neuron becomes less likely to fire.
It is the counterweight to glutamate, the main excitatory messenger. Roughly speaking, glutamate presses the accelerator and GABA presses the brake.
That braking action is why GABA gets marketed for calm. The logic sounds airtight: more GABA, more quiet. The problem is the delivery route.
Does oral GABA cross the blood-brain barrier?
This is the controversy, and it deserves to be stated plainly. The blood-brain barrier is a tight filter between your bloodstream and your brain, and classic studies from decades ago found that GABA crosses it poorly, if at all.

If that finding holds, the GABA you swallow may never reach the neurons in the marketing story. Some newer animal research suggests small amounts might get through, or that transport varies with conditions, but nobody has settled the question in humans.
Any brand telling you this is resolved is ahead of the science. That includes brands that sell GABA, which includes us.
So why do small studies show relaxation effects?
Here is what makes GABA genuinely interesting: several small human studies report relaxation markers after people take it anyway.
Studies using roughly 100 mg of oral GABA have reported increased alpha brain waves, which are associated with relaxed alertness, and lower markers of stress within about 30 to 60 minutes. These studies are small, often a few dozen people, and some were funded by ingredient makers. They need replication before anyone leans on them hard.
If GABA is not crossing the barrier, how would those effects happen? Three routes get discussed.

The gut-vagus hypothesis has momentum because your gut is dense with nerve endings, and some gut bacteria both produce and respond to GABA. But hypothesis is the right word.

People have been eating GABA for a long time
GABA is not a lab invention. Lactic acid bacteria produce it during fermentation, so it shows up naturally in kimchi, tempeh, miso, sourdough, and some aged cheeses.
Japan has sold GABA-enriched tea since the 1980s, made by fermenting tea leaves under nitrogen. None of this proves a mechanism. It does mean humans have a long, uneventful history of consuming GABA in food amounts.
What GABA cannot do
GABA will not make up for a genuinely short night, a heavy caffeine habit, or a schedule with no margin in it. No ingredient does that.
It is also not the answer to a racing mind that regularly interferes with your work, relationships, or sleep. If that is where you are, talk to a doctor first; that is a conversation, not a supplement decision.
